Organization of my office

OK this is a mess! I've decided to organize my office at home so that everything is not on the floor!

Starting out I'm trying to inventory what I have the most of, which is cables, and DVD's/CD's. I have very little paper, and a bunch of notebooks/binders, and some books.

I'm thinking that I should get rid of most of the cables, except for the ones I need. Then take all the junk I bring home from work back. After that...I probably don't have much to organize.

more later.

Computers and Virus checkers

One thing I get a lot of being in the computer industry is questions on why does my PC run slow or Lockup etc.? My answer is normally pretty vague, stating that many different things contribute to a PC's poor performance or causing it to lock up. But recently I've had to laugh at quite a few cases where I go to my friends house to repair the PC and guess what...

I find no fewer than 5 virus checking applications, at least one "registry cleaner" (3 in one case), and numerous other "free" downloadable applications to fix this, that and the other thing.

All I can say to them is "lots of people do this".

and it's true - so many "noobs" out there think that the more protection they have the better off they are. Absolutely not true. While it is good to have a virus application, spyware protection and utilities to keep your system running smoothly, you don't need a ton of applications to do this.

now I'm not a Microsoft junky, but if you are using a MS operating system you have some pretty easy to use options for everything you need.

India - First Day

First day on my trip to Bangalore, India has just about wrapped up. I spent the first day setting up for a training session I'm delivering over the next 2 weeks.

My first impressions this time around are quite a bit different then my first 2 trips here, which were both to Delhi (New Delhi). The roads here are much better, and the traffic has been quite a bit less, so the fright factor is a lot less. I've noticed that the power lines and phone lines are not quite so "tapped" into, and it seems cleaner.

I had breakfast at the hotel, and asked the waiter to show me what a "normal" Indian breakfast was like. It was quite tasty actually. I will get the names and pictures of the food I ate tomorrow, but one of them was a rice/vegetable/lentil mixture that was pretty good. It had a great flavor, very savory. The other thing I had a "dumpling" like that you dunk in a tomato based soup, and then put a sauce of choice on. Two of the 3 sauces were hot, the third was coconut based and still had a little bite to it, but was my favorite, made it just a slight bit sweet.

This evening I went to the cafeteria at the site I'm at, and had two vegetarian things...can't remember the name, and a smoothie from some fruit I've never heard of...I need to upgrade my memory so I can remember the names of this stuff.

So far my trip has been great - my flight from Denver to Frankfurt landed about an hour ahead of schedule which made my 1:25 minute layover 2 hours and 25 minutes, and it was nice not to have to hurry. AND my luggage made it! So I had all my stuff.

More on the India trip later.
The picture here is one I took as a video on the way into the office - it's an open air market.
